After a few days waiting for a weather window we headed down Lake Worth out of Palm Beach/Lake Worth Cut. We stayed within a mile of the coast. Matie posed with Palm Beach in the background!
We had a breakfast of steel cut oats with bananas, grapes & maple syrup to get us going. Matie stowed ropes, fenders, put away ice, cleaned the galley. All breakables stowed. Not easy being a matie but the rewards are many! Capt. Tom maneuvered our vessel masterfully thru wakes created by fishing boats trying to get to their destinations at breakneck speeds.
So a little rocking and rolling today. We passed Peanut Island (Kennedy Post, during the Cuban Missle Crisis).
We also passed the square rig "Peacemaker" on our way out of the cut.
Encountering 3-6 ft. seas and variable 20-25kt. winds did not deter the salty sailors. We saw lots of flying fish when we neared the gulf steam. Dolphins and sea turtles delighted us on our journey. Love taking pics of all of them. Capt. & Matie got some good isometric exercise in bracing ourselves today. We saw 5 cruise ships pass in front of us before we went into the cut in Ft. Lauderdale.
We decided to go in this evening and anchored in a nice small protected area in Lake Sylvia, Ft Lauderdale for a needed break.
3/29/15: We got underway after grabbing ice at the local marina out of Port Everglades. Needed to maneuver around many cruise ships and container ships.
We had a very nice sail today and took some silly selfies to pass the time. Look at that gorgeous aquamarine water. Love it!
Beautiful lighthouse at Cape Florida at the entrance to Bill Baggs State Park.
We anchored in the Southern Tip of Key Biscayne in No Name Harbor, in the State Park.
Our First Key!
I never cared much for that stretch of water between Miami and Key Largo for some reason. It seemed kinda spooky...like you are in the ocean, but you're not. Or, you are in a bay, but it's the ocean. Like, this is the Burmuda Triangle or something.
ReplyDeleteHaHa! We loved it! The water turned aquamarine as soon as we left the cut. A few times we were kinda close to the gulfstream and had flying fish all around us, which was cool.We really enjoyed the scenery when we could no longer see the Miami skyline.
